How Technology Has Changed Astronomy

telescopesIn the early days, heavenly bodies and other celestial objects were associated with some gods and any of their movements interpreted to mean prophecies of what would soon come to pass. New technological advances have led to rapid changes in the field of astronomy.

From the invention of new methods of data acquisition, discovery of new spectral zones, new space simulation methods, faster data capturing, processing, storage and accessibility, astronomy has never been the old century practice of its founders. Here is a look at how technology has changed astronomy today.

Astronomical observatories

Observatories are now designing and acquiring very powerful and expensive telescopes, capable of gathering more light, observing farther into space, and achieving a higher image resolution as a result of their large diameters.

Accessibility of databases

Astronomers often use pre-collected data to conduct their research. The All Sky Automated Survey and the 2 Micron All Sky Survey are among the large survey programs that have provided pre-collected astronomical data. They have formed a continuous data inflow for the astronomers. Technological advances have now led to the prospecting for a virtual observatory where astronomers will spend a little time at a physical observatory owing to the large databases that will be available.

Faster data processing

Since the acquisition of data is now automated, most initial data processing procedures have also been automated to achieve speed and efficiency. This involves calibration and cleaning of spatial images to remove distortions. To achieve high-quality information, automation of data processing is one of the ways through which technology has changed astronomy.

Data exploration

Since astronomical data is constantly being generated, more data exploration needs to be done. Modern data exploration programs such as the Galaxy Zoo have created as a result of technology. More data programming and database management tools are still being employed by the modern day astronomers to facilitate accurate data exploration and interpretation.

There is no doubt that technology has played an important role in the realization of modern-day astronomy. Data is more readily available unlike before. Technology has led to the development of new astronomical discoveries that would not have realized if it were not for the modern technological trends.

New spectral regimes have discovered, space simulations have been made, and the old habits like the use of a telescope with a single eyepiece are long gone. Real-time time data capture and processing can now be done comfortably from the workstation, a clear indication that technology has changed astronomy today.

Using SEO for Astronomy

astronomyAstronomy is the study of celestial objects. The objects include; stars, galaxies, asteroids, nebulae, planets, moon and comets. It involves a combination of chemistry, physics and evolution of the objects. Therefore, it is considered a natural science and is known to be one of the oldest science that have evolved all through the years. It is also part of the history of the early civilizations. The oldest science has been turned to be the exciting modern science done by professionals and not amateurs.

Here are some tips on using SEO to educate about astronomy:

Astronomy requires devotion and passion for one to be able to educate on matters concerning the topic. It is an amazing field that one should be able to take up at an early age by showing interest. However, one can also learn about it later in life. Reading about it on books and online has been a mile in getting more knowledge about this science. Studies made at night also gives one good view of the stars; it should be done far from street lights and using binoculars and telescopes to view. So many questions that may arise when you are doing your studies can be answered online on major websites that give answers example the University of Virginia.

Some soft wares have been developed for personal computers, and applications are also available for smartphones that you can download for free and get more knowledge about astronomy. The applications use global positioning satellite for identifying what the phone is pointing at. Using SEO to educate about astronomy does not require one to attend in person. You can, however, form a class and be in a group that discusses astronomy online. The instructor of the group, in this case, communicates with the students through discussion forums that involve all the students. Other online instructors organize their students into smaller groups that require one to participate and perform well.

Learning online is the best alternative way of assembling in classes and having lectures. In these form of learning, it is easy, and you get to interact in forums with other students under the supervision of the instructor. Through discussions that are done online in your small group of students, you will get more knowledge while you get to watch the videos too. It requires a lot of discipline to thrive in this kind of learning. Assignment and group works have to be submitted for proper evaluation and on time. It is for these reasons I recommend getting educated on astronomy through Baltimore, MD SEO, it is the best kind of learning and service.

What Is A Blue Moon

blue moonA blue-colored moon? No, unless matters such as smoke particles are present in the atmosphere, you may never see a blue-colored moon. You’ve used or heard this term- a blue moon. In language, the term means something that rarely occurs. However, in astronomy, the term means a completely different thing. The definition of a blue moon has changed significantly following the previous gloomy definition. A few decades ago, the term referred to the occurrence of four full moons within one season. For instance, the third full moon was the blue moon. Currently, when two full moons occur in the same month, the 2nd full moon is referred to as the blue moon.

How did the change in definition occur? In 1946, James Hugh wrote an article about the Maine Farmer’s Almanac, which by then called the third of the four full moons in a season ‘Blue Moon.’ He expounded that 13 full moons in a year occurred seven times every 19 years. Each of the eleven months had one full moon and one month had two. He decided to call the second one ‘Blue Moon’. From then on, the term was frequently used leading to the adoption of his idea of the 2nd full moon in a month being the Blue Moon.

Now, how many blue moons can occur in a year? To answer such a question, we’ll have to deploy some arithmetic skills. Let’s consider the current definition of a blue moon. A year contains approximately 365.25 days. The lunar cycle takes around 29.5 days. Dividing the days of the year by the days of the lunar cycle we get 12. 38 moon. Since there is no decimal moon(s), the figure denotes an existence of a year with 13 full moons. The 13 full moons indicate the presence of two blue moons during the same year. The year 1999 is an example. Two full moons occurred in both January and March. There was no full moon during February. The next occurrence will be in January and March of 2018, 2037, etc. If we consider the earlier definition of a blue moon, only a maximum of two blue moons can occur in the same year. It is much rare to have the blue moon, the 2nd full moon in the month, and the blue moon, the third full moon in the season, occurring in the same year. 1948 is the year this will occur.

Despite the two definitions being different, they agree on one thing- 13 full moons can occur in the same year.

Once in a blue moon is a common saying.  It refers to things happening out of the ordinary.  You could say “Once in a blue moon, I hired a Baltimore errand service.”  Meaning, that you hire a company to help you once in a while.
